For a B2B client that incentivizes customer reviews for home goods brands, I wrote an eBook on the history of home goods marketing. In it, I illustrate how campaigns designed to "disrupt" traditional marketing channels evolved alongside technology—from early TV campaigns that matched the tone of what an audience was watching, to today's digital campaigns that match the function of what an audience is doing. I call this "disrupting by fitting in", and close by analyzing 5 campaigns doing this in 2021—along with their implications for the future.

MAYTAG DISRUPTS BY FITTING IN ︎︎︎&nbsp; &nbsp;︎︎︎

	THE MAYTAG MAN REIGNS

	Appliance maker Maytag thrived during this time, manufacturing everything from vacuum cleaners to refrigerators. They also found massive success selling some of the first commercial-grade washers and dryers. Maytag became a household name &amp; dominated the market, but competition from larger corporations like General Electric, Whirlpool and Frigidaire quickly followed, making the next decade one filled with much stiffer competition.Maytag needed a new way to stand out, so in 1967 it launched a different kind of ad campaign—one centered on a Maytag repair man named Jesse White, commonly referred to as “the loneliest guy in town”. The running joke of the Maytag Man campaign was that Jesse never got to do his job—all the Maytag appliances he was supposed to fix were just too dependable, so he was never needed. In one commercial, Jessie is repairing a washer, and enjoying being back inside the machine he loves, only to be interrupted by his wife, who asks why he’s taking their own machine apart again. “Gotta stay in practice,” he replies.The ad campaign continues to run to this day, with a younger Maytag man now continuing Jesse’s legacy, and is considered one of the most successful TV campaigns of all time. By introducing a character that felt more at home in a sitcom, but had his function tied to a clear message (Maytag appliances are so dependable that they almost never need to be repaired), Maytag got viewers’ attention and then drove the point home, over and over. Now when Americans went to the store to decide between washer brands, they were already primed to think of Maytag as the most dependable.

	The Maytag Man campaign disrupted marketing by adapting to the look, the writing &amp; the overall tone of the programs viewers were already watching (ironically, White’s daughter, Carole Ita White, eventually joined the cast of sitcom Laverne &amp; Shirley &amp; its spin-off Angie). On top of that, it centered around a recurring character, which always made the audience excited to see where his “story” went next. It was a trick that many others began to use for selling just about anything, and continues to be used today. Even though it doesn’t focus on home goods, a contemporary example of a campaign Maytag inspired would be Progressive Insurance’s Flo—a peppy saleswoman who, in 2021, doesn’t even mention why Progressive is better than its competitors.

	ON INFLUENCERS

Web 2.0 provided another kind of innovation that changed the face of marketing: the influencer. While early Youtube stars—commonly known as Youtubers—began to leverage their niche fame into marketing partnerships, it wasn’t until Instagram that brands really got wise to all the possibilities of a whole new marketing channel. Big-time Instagram celebrities began to promote products in their posts and collect millions of likes from their legions of followers, which dramatically inverted the classic selling formula. Instead of product ads filled with characters that resembled ones the audience was already following, now the real-life characters were featuring the product themselves, all within their own medium.
What made this doubly effective was the hyper-targeting that influencer marketing offered. It had never been easier to sell a very specific product to a very specific audience. A great example of this was Pottery Barn Teen’s 2015 collaboration with Youtuber &amp; Instagram influencer Meg DeAngelis, aka Maybaby. With 1.5 million followers on Instagram &amp; a whopping 4.74 million subscribers on Youtube, DeAngelis commanded a lot of attention—particularly from teens—for her mix of day-in-the-life vlogs, beauty tips and performances.
PBTeen’s partnership was a match for the retailer/manufacturer’s key demographic. Together with Youtube channel AwesomenessTV (8.55 million subscribers), they produced a six-part do-it-yourself design series called Revved Up Rooms, where DeAngelis tackled a different DIY challenge every week.

	<img width="1876" height="1212" width_o="1876" height_o="1212" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/f60ae42e48b588a2beeeb25a1d09a5093b530e69c00032e81868a6fb4072858a/Screen-Shot-2021-11-21-at-7.50.59-PM.png" data-mid="125275408" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/f60ae42e48b588a2beeeb25a1d09a5093b530e69c00032e81868a6fb4072858a/Screen-Shot-2021-11-21-at-7.50.59-PM.png" />old school influencers

	The series played into the audience’s emotional need for individuality (what teen doesn’t like customizing their bedroom?) while featuring PBTeen’s products in a prominent and quite literally constructive way, anchored by a personality that already had the demo’s trust. With millions of views, the series was a hit, and PBTeen profited accordingly.
This example illustrates a point that’s now well-known amongst brands—when it comes to the right audience, influencer trust can swiftly translate into brand trust; a big upgrade over simple brand awareness (without the extra work of hooking an audience’s emotions with the content itself). It's the complete evolution of the disrupt-by-fitting-in philosophy that gave us the Maytag Man.

	INFLUENCER MARKETING

	Building off of the previous PBTeen example, Home Depot found a way to sell their products with an updated twist on influencer marketing. The initial Web 2.0 version of this marketing channel focused on influencers like Maybaby &amp; much bigger stars—but over the years, brands learned there was a smarter way to get to their audience. As Instagram evolved into an ever-more-powerful force, many influencers began to cap out before reaching the heights of millions of followers. Today there are three tiers of influencers commonly acknowledged: the mega influencers (A-list performers or anyone who commands over a million followers), macro influencers (largely Internet-born celebrities with 100,000 to a million followers) and micro influencers (niche figures with 1000 to 100,000 followers, with most sitting comfortably around 30,000-70,000). For its own Instagram presence, Home Depot decided to lean into working with the latter.

	<img width="1632" height="1202" width_o="1632" height_o="1202" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/7800b5994f002e380503acbc69218f2ed82d32d8b247b6e6b5061df124cea110/Screen-Shot-2021-11-21-at-8.13.23-PM.png" data-mid="125276189" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/7800b5994f002e380503acbc69218f2ed82d32d8b247b6e6b5061df124cea110/Screen-Shot-2021-11-21-at-8.13.23-PM.png" />
	<img width="2146" height="1426" width_o="2146" height_o="1426" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/cc5811afb1765845f58c6c8d07f072d55c39f4002eacaa9f8aae24525954a2f3/Screen-Shot-2021-11-21-at-8.13.54-PM.png" data-mid="125276299" border="0" data-scale="100" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/cc5811afb1765845f58c6c8d07f072d55c39f4002eacaa9f8aae24525954a2f3/Screen-Shot-2021-11-21-at-8.13.54-PM.png" />Home Depot Instagram collaborations

	It turned out to be a wise move that boosted the retailer’s own popularity to over 1.2 million Instagram followers, and engaged with its audience in highly strategic ways. The benefits of a micro-influencer partnership begin with a lower rate of pay (as opposed to the $1 million-per-post rate mega influencers like the Kardashians regularly collect), but extend to more efficient hyper-targeting. As stated in the case of PBTeen &amp; MayBaby, an influencer’s trust is often transferred to the brand, and trust is decisively stronger between micro-influencers and their followers than macro and certainly mega tiers.
A micro influencer often gains &amp; maintains their following by doing something within an incredibly specific niche, and the closer a brand targets that niche, the deeper they can disrupt it by fitting in. The final benefit to working with micro influencers is that you can afford to work with many of them, and target each of their followings individually.

	For Roaming Hunger, I pitched, designed and wrote various content to drive traffic, improve SEO and increase conversion for both clients &amp; partners, including the two blog posts linked above.For the first, I audited RH's existing LA clients and curated a list of food trucks that would appeal specifically to an office with NY expats. Over the course of 3 months, office bookings more than doubled for every vendor mentioned, with some more than quadrupling.

After, I documented the rise of South Central chefs and home-grown entrepreneurs who were cooking in backyards or popping up in unorthodox locales, and using Instagram to amass cult followings. This blog gained traction across social media (thanks to those cult followings), and resulted in direct partnerships between RH and many of the vendors featured.

	To be specific, Joe’s Pizza, arguably Manhattan’s greatest slice, has gone bicoastal, setting up shop in Los Angeles without missing a note. In fact it’s creepy how much it tastes like the original. Well, more delicious than creepy, but still—right down to the crust, this is a pie that’ll have you screaming at taxis and chasing subways in your mind when you bite in and close your eyes. Which, to any ex-New Yorker, is something akin to inner peace.

	My work for LED grow light company California Lightworks included this case study, documenting their technology's performance in a test run by Grow Ohio. I familiarized myself with both the science and technical language of the industry to communicate authentically to commercial growers, while remaining accessible to novice farmers. The goal for both audiences was to highlight California Lightworks as an authority in the market.

“Based in Columbus,
Grow Ohiois a cannabis cultivator and processor dedicated to providing safe &amp; consistent medical marijuana that meets the same strict standards as pharmaceutical medication.”

	MegaDrive™ Lighting Technology Case Study
	︎︎︎

	The operations of California Lightworks have grown quickly over the years, leading Grow Ohio to look for new ways of maximizing efficiency, without sacrificing any quality.A big part of this new strategy involves swapping out many of their MH (Metal Halide) and HPS (High-Pressure Sodium) grow lights for LEDs, which often cost more upfront but run far more efficiently in the long run. But which LEDs to go with? For that question, Grow Ohio set up a trial between California Lightworks and three of our strongest competitors.
	<img width="3835" height="4000" width_o="3835" height_o="4000" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/742feefbb2744160b991ed9801079847101e99b408a9be15aa374cd9ee3b2a54/kai-dahms-217U8oxGoQ4-unsplash.png" data-mid="124819637" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/742feefbb2744160b991ed9801079847101e99b408a9be15aa374cd9ee3b2a54/kai-dahms-217U8oxGoQ4-unsplash.png" />

	︎︎︎
	Testing the Difference: Head to Head

	Grow Ohio tested the LEDs by dividing an indoor room of growing tables amongst the four companies chosen: California Lightworks, Gavita, Grower’s Choice, and PhotoBio. This gave them a clear side-by-side comparison for every aspect of the yield. Across all aspects— from mass, to bud growth to overall quality, California Lightworks’ LEDs were the clear standout; out-performing every other company we were tested against.

Grow Ohio then decided to test a full room of crops under California Lightworks’ MegaDrive technology. Compared to the rooms still outfitted with HPS lights, California Lightworks was again the clear winner, with the mass (both in terms of grams per square foot and grams per watt) and quality of the yielded crops surpassing those of the others.

	Glass House started the first cycle in June of 2020. While there was still plenty of natural light out, the weather had been a bit foggy. This was the optimal time to see if supplemental lighting could help counteract subpar environmental conditions.
Glass House was able to set up two separate sections of their greenhouse—one with supplemental lighting and one without. Thanks to the computer-controlled conditions, they were able to keep all other parameters the same. This created the perfect environment for an side-by-side comparison. The only change between the two sections was the MegaDrive system, so any differences in growth and final yield could be attributed to supplemental lighting.

	The Advantages of MegaDrive™
	︎︎︎

MegaDrive made it easy for Glass House Farms to add supplemental lights. The system is built to maximize efficiency while significantly reducing upfront and operating costs.The secret is the MegaDrive’s 10,000 watt single power supply that takes incoming 480 volts through an independent breaker. This power supply is wall mountable, eliminating the need for power drops over the canopy. It is capable of running up to 30 400-watt LED fixtures. These fixtures come with dual spectrum control and separate channels for red and white, which can be dimmed from zero to 100%, either manually or automatically.MegaDrive also comes with a wireless Bluetooth control system that operates independently or integrates with most popular environmental controllers. The cloud-based data communication system allows you to control functions from any Bluetooth device—and from virtually anywhere in the world.All this made it easy for Glass House to quickly install and start running supplemental lighting. Hanging the lights was much simpler without having to run drops to every fixture. Controlling the lights via smartphones gave them a simple way to tweak light spectrums throughout the grow cycle as needed.MegaDrive provided them a more convenient, lower cost option for testing the efficiency of supplemental lighting on their plants.

	Current Results and Future Plans

	<img width="6000" height="4000" width_o="6000" height_o="4000" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/b2ba68bc3e0b8b2a4537c09f2e0fc98c4e2b4b782f4e55b13b3a263127046fa5/elsa-olofsson-2HGA1_mHtPtg-unsplash.png" data-mid="124820737" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/b2ba68bc3e0b8b2a4537c09f2e0fc98c4e2b4b782f4e55b13b3a263127046fa5/elsa-olofsson-2HGA1_mHtPtg-unsplash.png" />
	In just three weeks, there were already signs the supplemental lights were improving the yield. As the flowers began to grow, the buds were larger on the plants grown under the lights. They were also significantly larger than the plants growing under natural sunlight.After the first harvest, Glass House saw a nearly 30% increase in finished product. This is particularly notable given these crops were harvested over the summer, where natural light is at its peak. They credited the efficiency of the MegaDrive system for this boost, particularly the adjustable spectrum control that allowed them to use red and white light at different points in the grow cycle.Happy with the results, Glass House plans to continue to grow with MegaDrive Greenhouse Lighting Technology and have already done two more cycles using the lights. Glass House Farms is optimistic about both their own future and the future of California’s market in general. Already the third largest flower brand in the state, Glass House hopes to continue to expand their business through their dedication to continued innovation and experimentation.

This Jungle Primary's nabbed national headlines for being every bit the messy sideshow its name would entail. In late 2019, Gov. Kemp named entrepreneur &amp; political newcomer Kelly Loeffler to fill resigning Sen. Isakson's seat. What Loeffler lacked in actual experience, she made up for by by owning over $500 Million dollars. As a side-note, many of those dollars were previously donated to the National Republican Senatorial Committee, which then endorsed her for the seat. In Loeffler, Kemp sees a chance to regain women the GOP lost after backing locker room orator Donald Trump. Loeffler is Kemp's Take Me Back gift to women across Georgia—an animate #girlboss mug purchased from a drugstore &amp; ready to consolidate loose change. Since entering office, Loeffler's loose change has already been scrutinized—like David Perdue, she received early Covid briefings, then traded a fishy surge of stocks in private, while downplaying the threat in public. It looks BAD, but of course that's not why her own party's challenging her.Loeffler's own party is actually still Trump's party, which means she's the one who's off-brand now. As one of the president's most obediant House pledges, Rep. Doug Collins earned the White House's favor, and was pushed hard to fill Isakson's seat. When Kemp picked Loeffler instead, Trump let him know that it wasn't meant to be a suggestion. He pushed Collins again, this time on voters—to be chosen over Loeffler in a primary challenge. It sent a very clear message that neither candidate's backing away from: Collins has attacked Loeffler for donating thousands to moderate Dems (besides actual millions to Republicans), and of course committing the Original Sin of being friendly with Stacey Abrams. If you feel like there's no one to root for, the bad news is one of them's currently favored to eventually win the seat.
The two Dems running represent two sides of the same Left (it's roomy there): Rev. Raphael Warnock; current pastor of famed Ebenezer Baptist Church, and Matt Lieberman; permanent son of Joe Lieberman (yes....that one). Warnock has snagged big-time endorsements from half the Senate, including Elizabeth Warren, and a number of high-profile unions. Arrested in 2017 for protesting the budget in DC, he quickly became a force for organised activism, both nationally and locally. Warnock is advocating for putting workers' rights first in GA. Lieberman, meanwhile, is also a political newcomer, but is running because "the gap between what Georgians want and what Republicans reflect in Georgia is huge." It's a quote that keeps saying more, the more you read it. Despite calls from the NAACP to drop out (because of his self-published novel about a man and his imaginary slave) Lieberman persists - fighting for moderation, especially on healthcare. He currently trails Warnock in the polls.
It's unlikely any of these four will recieve over 50% of the vote, which means the two most popular candidates will move forward to a run-off in late January. And that's most popular overall - not one per party. The success forecasted for Republicans here is all based on this rule, so don't just choose your favorite candidate her - choose them loudly

	Lindsey Graham's lack of shame is downright impressive. Not admirable, mind you, but naturally awe-inspiring - like a ladybug, or a slug, or any number of exotic invertebrates. Before 2016, Graham wasn't exactly the picture of integrity, but he honored the general spirit of bipartisanship. Unlike many southern GOP gentlemen, Graham was eager to work with Democrats on issues like climate change and immigration reform, preferring to be at the table instead of irrelevant. Since the arrival of Donald Trump, however, the senator's need for relevancy has fully eclipsed the meaning of his words. During the 2016 primary, Graham characterized Trump as a "jackass", "a race-baiting, xenophobic, religious bigot". Trump responded by giving out Graham's cell phone number during a campaign speech. Graham concluded to CNN that Trump was a "kook" and "unfit for office", but like any buddy comedy, this was all just friendship foreplay.
After the president took office, Graham shifted his tone. Instead of attacking Trump to stay on camera, he began defending Trump to stay on camera. "You know what concerns me about the American press is this endless attempt to label the guy as some kind of kook, not fit to be president", Graham said, less than a year after doing exactly that himself, on camera. Most troublingly, the look on his face suggested he really believed himself. In 2020, South Carolina might actually, really, TRULY be done marveling at the natural splendor of Lindsey Graham. Democrat Jaime Harrison has been a challenger like none other, and closed the gap completely in this race. At this point, a scarecrow would be more palatable than Graham to most voters, but Harrison's run has been impressive all the same. A moderate Dem with friendships across the aisle, he was the first black chair of the South Carolina Democrats, and knows how to compromise - a skill Graham forgot on the way to the cameras.

	Good lord this race has been ugly to watch - as anything involving Mitch McConnell obviously is. If history survives our current era, McConnell will be remembered as the man who almost ended it. Underneath a polite, Kentucky Koopaman persona, he's one of the most radical politicians Congress has ever seen; upending tradition just to stonewall one president, then upending democracy to advance another. All, of course, under the guise of preserving conservative values (to him, destruction is really the purest form of conservation). McConnell really has muted the word "hypocrisy" for himself in a way that approaches art, capped by two very different approaches to filling one Supreme Court vacancy. McConnell still manages to confound people with his political contradictions, but that's only because they're still listening to him. When it comes to action, he's always been consistent - he does what it takes to win. Even if it's unclear what he thinks he's really winning. Now, as the foundational damage McConnell (and a Koch brother or two) has done to the country becomes clearer and clearer, his approval in Kentucky has finally dropped, giving Democrats the opening they've always wanted.&nbsp;
Enter Amy McGrath, an ex-Marine fighter pilot who almost beat Andy Barr for his House seat in 2018. Losing by the slimmest of margins, and polling favorably throughout KY, McGrath was the Democrats' clear favorite to challenge McConnell. But the primary was contentious, as the moderate (some have called her conservative) McGrath faced a very stiff challenge from progressive Charles Booker. With the full weight of the DNC behind her, McGrath squeeked out a victory, but not without controversy - or bitterness. Since winning, McGrath has been flooded with donations. The problem is, there's not much excitement. As of writing, McGrath is trailing McConnell by double digits, even with her record fundraising haul. Whether it be resentment on the left, nihilism on the right, or any number of lies in-between, most voters in KY are still buying what Mitch is selling. Or, at least, not enough want to buy from McGrath. It might take a miracle to turn this race around, and unfortunately, McConnell's quite lucky at dodging those.

CALIFORNIA
PROP 22︎

	A YES VOTE

You support defining app-based transportation (rideshare) and delivery drivers as independent contractors, along with adopting labor and wage policies specific to these models.

	A NO VOTE
You oppose defining app-based transportation (rideshare) and delivery drivers as independent contractors, along with adopting labor and wage policies specific to these models.

	&nbsp;SUMMARY

	Prop 22 is the next chapter in a nasty debate over the status of independent contractors in California. Last year's AB 5, which was meant to force app services like Uber, Lyft and PostMates into classifyng their workers as employees, wound up punishing a whole lot of other freelancers (namely CA's actors, writers &amp; musicians); ending their livelihoods &amp; ending business models that had run smooth for decades.
Now, the companies AB 5 meant to hit might be the only ones to dodge it: Prop 22 would exempt app-based drivers and delivery workers from being labelled "employees" under AB's rules, so long as they're allowed to work on their own schedule. Aside from all the companies mentioned, both the California State Sherrifs Association and the California Police Chiefs Association back Prop 22. In other words—all people who've gotten used to the new business as usual, and want to maintain it. Backers of Prop 22 say that if app workers are truly classified as employees, the structure will collapse—prices will soar while availability plumets. If this also sounds like a threat, then maybe it also sounds like a threat.
Independent researchers have pointed out that Prop 22's unique labor benefits still pale in comparison to what these workers are entitled to as CA employees. It's a sentiment echoed by Prop 22's high-profile opponents—from Joe Biden to Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren and a host of labor unions, all of whom point out that as these companies make record profits, they deny their workers overtime, social security and a host of other traditional rights.
The other problem, however, seems to be no one has a solution to protect these workers in a new landscape. Prop 22's passage would be a big win for no one you wanna root for, but as the carelessness surrounding AB 5 has shown, efforts to protect workers can actually make them unemployable. Prop 22's passage might feel like a cynical life raft for a lot of workers who've grown to rely on these new models, ethical or not. But its defeat would put the task of dodging state-wide chaos onto companies rich enough to use chaos for publicity. In short, this might be the messiest prop on the ballot. Your vote here doesn't just come down to how you feel workers deserve to be treated in the future, but how these specific workers deserve to be treated right now: with no safety net to catch them, should more chaos ensue. However you vote here, be nice to yourself about it, because oof.

	COLORADO
PROP 114︎

	A YES VOTE
You support a plan to reintroduce and manage gray wolves on designated Colorado land by the end of 2023.
	A NO VOTE
You oppose a plan to reintroduce and manage gray wolves on designated Colorado land by the end of 2023.

 SUMMARY

	Prop 114 is a lively one in many senses, seeking a reintroducton of gray wolves to the Colorado wilderness. 30 years before becoming a federally-endangered species, CO's last gray wolf was killed. Now, recent data suggests large portions of state ecosystems have been failing ever since. In the absence of a key predator, elk and deer numbers have skyrocketed, eating away at so much vegation that erosion has become unmanageable—along with damage to natural songbird and beaver habitats. In short, CO wildlife's balance has tilted.
Proponents of Prop 114—including former Gov. Bill Ritter and author Tim Ferris—claim gray wolves could restore this balance, much like they did for Yellowstone's formerly threatened ecosystem. The measure contains strict guidelines and accountability to state and local governments, affirming this strategy would be carefully researched and barred from imposing any land, resource or water restrictions onto private landowners. Finally, the commission would be required to fairly compensate owners for any livestock lost.
Not everyone is thrilled by the idea—namely the Colorado Farm Bureau, which poured the bulk of fundraising into opposition efforts. After a pack of wolves was spotted in Northwest CO, Bureau VP Chad Vorthmann remarked that the measure's authors "should let mother nature work its magic, stop trying to impose their will on the natural world, and retract their ballot measure." The CFB's main argument isn't that Prop 114's an objectively bad decision, just that it's a bad decision to leave with voters instead of the experts (many of whom worked on the measure, actually). If you're reading this, it means Prop 114's still on the ballot, making that argument largely irrelevant.
